Mr. Hertrick practices primarily in the areas of civil litigation, domestic relations/family law, asset protection and general business counseling, with a focus on complex civil litigation, construction/surety litigation and divorce/dissolutions/custody/child support matters. Based on his extensive experience in complex civil litigation, Mr. Hertrick is well-versed in "high stakes" litigation, which he draws upon when counseling clients not only in litigation but also in the general business arena and asset protection for individuals through the use of trusts and company formations. He has litigated in federal and state courts or otherwise represented clients throughout the United States, including Ohio, California, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington D.C. Likewise, Mr. Hertrick has represented clients in arbitration and mediation in those jurisdictions.

Mr. Hertrick's extensive experience in complex civil litigation proves advantageous in highly-contested divorce, custody and post-decree matters, especially those matters involving high net worth individuals, large property divisions, and fierce custody battles. As with his representation of companies in business litigation, Mr. Hertrick takes a proactive, aggressive approach to representing his divorce and family law clients. Yet, when appropriate, Mr. Hertrick provides his clients with creative solutions to resolve pending or current litigation. Regardless of whether his client is an individual finding him or herself in a contentious divorce, or a business involved in "bet the company litigation," Mr. Hertrick thoroughly communicates with his clients throughout the process, routinely advising on the risks and rewards of certain strategies.

Having litigated countless disputes, Mr. Hertrick fully understands the value of asset protection in an effort to avoid litigation. Thus, in addition to litigation, Mr. Hertrick advises small to mid-size companies in their general business affairs and structuring those companies in a manner to reduce liability. In that capacity, he serves as outside general counsel to many companies.

Similarly, Mr. Hertrick provides similar asset protection and estate planning counsel to individuals. Through the proper use of trusts, limited liability companies, and closely held corporations, Mr. Hertrick offers unique approaches to estate planning that can help protect against one losing assets accumulated during his or her lifetime to nursing care facilities or Medicaid and minimize tax exposure. To that end, Mr. Hertrick assists his clients by determining which estate planning strategy is appropriate based on his clients' needs and concerns, then preparing the appropriate estate planning documents to meet those needs and concerns. Thus, Mr. Hertrick is well-versed in the preparation of wills and various trusts, from simple to complex. When necessary, Mr. Hertrick utilizes his vast network of accountants and financial planners to determine how to maximize and individuals wealth during his or her lifetime and ensure that wealth passes on to the next generation.

Prior to joining Laribee & Hertrick, Mr. Hertrick was an associate at Chambers USA Leading Law Firms located in the Washington D.C. metro area where he practiced in the areas of construction and surety litigation, and he was an associate at large regional firm headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio where he also practiced primarily in the area of construction litigation. Mr. Hertrick continues to represent owners, contractors, subcontractors, sureties and manufacturers in matters involving public and private construction projects. Mr. Hertrick has successfully represented construction clients on a wide variety of projects, including elementary and high schools, industrial parks, waste water treatment plants, tunnel projects, bridges, manufacturing facilities, hotels, commercial retail buildings and the billion dollar renovation of the Pentagon. He represents construction clients during all phases of the project, including the negotiation of contracts, counseling during ongoing construction and resolution of claims at the end of the project.
